Question of the week
Getting ready for the new €10
The ECB and the central banks of the euro area countries are to introduce the new €10 banknote in 2014. Preparations for the issuance have been under way for several months now.
The central banks of the euro area have contacted banknote equipment manufacturers, as well as banks, retailers, etc. which either produce or use handling and authentication devices, offering to help them adapt their machines to the new €10.
What steps are being taken to prepare for the arrival of the new €10 banknote?
− Banknote equipment manufacturers (BEMs) and organisations that use banknote equipment will have sufficient time to prepare for the arrival of the new €10 and will be given access to the new banknote for testing either:
- at their respective central bank;
- for in-house testing at the manufacturer’s facility or on-the-spot testing at the customer’s location after signing an agreement.
− Seminars covering the details of the issuance will be held across the euro area countries. BEMs should contact their national central bank and ask for details about the seminar(s) in their country.
− The ECB and the national central banks will offer BEMs and others a chance to promote the new €10 banknote via a partnership programme. This programme will allow partners to receive timely information and to communicate easily and efficiently to their stakeholders.
− This website will provide regular information to facilitate the updating of banknote equipment. It will include details of testing opportunities at the respective national central bank as well as for in-house testing at the manufacturer’s facility or on-the-spot testing at the customer’s location.
− Before they purchase a device or a machine, customers should ask the supplier if it will accept the new banknotes. A list of banknote authentication devices and of banknote handling machines tested by the Eurosystem central banks indicating whether the equipment accepts the €5 banknote is available here.
− A list of banknote authentication devices and of banknote handling machines that accept the new €10 banknote will also be published on the ECB’s website, once they have been tested by the Eurosystem central banks.
− Additional information can be obtained from the national central banks.
As a banknote equipment manufacturer, what do we need to do now?
If you have not yet been informed about the new €10 or not had an opportunity to test it, please contact the central bank in your country.
As a bank/retailer/cash handling company, we own some authentication devices and/or banknote sorting machines, so what do I need to do now?
You should contact your supplier and ask how to update your banknote equipment.
Check out this page from time to time, as it will contain regular updates on how to prepare for the new €10 banknote. You can also subscribe to an RSS feed here.
A list of machines and devices that can handle the new €5 is available on the ECB’s website and will be updated regularly with information on the new €10.
Users/owners of banknote handling and/or authentication devices should liaise with the supplier or manufacturer in order to start preparing their machines for the new €10 banknote.
Do not hesitate to contact your national central bank or the European Central Bank if you have any questions or concerns.
